$2 PKO tournament – any sense on flop call?
Posted by outfocusmetal on May 24, 2023 at 8:44 amI think this was fairly early in a low stakes tournament. No reads on the opponent other than they weren’t one of the wild players chasing bounties at all costs.
I can’t find any rhyme or reason why they would call 1/4 of their stack on the flop.

He has an A and a back door. It’s a low stakes tournament. The range bet on the flop (you could go smaller) should be to keep dominated hands like this in. He just sucked out in you. Most of the time he won’t spike that 7. Players in low stakes don’t like to fold A’s.

This is a low stakes tournament and the players have not done a lot of studying. The villain in this hand made many mistakes. The flop call was not the biggest. First he limped in EP with the second worse Axo, the A6o being the worst, and then called a 4x raise from out of position. A lot of players don’t believe the c-better has a hand and will call with their A highs on the flop. You don’t want him to fold hands that you are clearly dominating. Unfortunately, he sucked out on you and won the pot. He now thinks that he played correctly and will continue to play this way. I want him at my table all day long.

Thanks both, that makes a lot of sense! I’m not worried about them spiking two pair on the river, more that by that point I was hoping/expecting them to have KQ, a weak J that I could play them off with a favourable turn or river, or even something like K6s considering they’re open limping.
Couldn’t get my head around why anyone would chase down that Ace so hard unless it was a misclick.

It’s a jack high unconnected rainbow flop. They think you are range betting, and they are right. With the 4X preflop bet, maybe they think they have more Jacks? Who knows.
The stack to pot ratio is 2 on the flop. A better bet size would be about 35% to keep in his worse aces and get it in smoothly by the river. -
This player limped from EP and called an iso with A7o. Loose passive players like to see flops cheaply. Given a cheap price they will also continue to see if they can improve on the turn and river. They are not thinking deeply about strategy. They likely aren’t familiar with ranges and equities.

Who knows what this kind of Villian is thinking about sometimes? He might have understood that you covered him and thus were incentivized to play more hands against him in a PKO, which is correct. And he’s tired of being bullied when he’s covered and he learned his schoolyard lesson that you have to stand up to bullies (tilt).
