  • 3-Way Sandwich Spot With Bottom Set and Ace-High Dry Static Flop

In a $400 MTT we are about 35bb effective. This is not a loose-passive table, but 3-betting frequencies are not very high. So we have made the decision to increase our open raise frequencies.

We open to about 2.2bb UTG with 22. The first caller in MP has been fairly active, though not maniacal. The BB caller has been fairly but not overly tight. But we have some table dynamic with the BB player. We have already 3-bet him three times in this session and he was visibly frustrated the last time.

The flop came A82 rainbow. BB checks in sequence. We bet about one-third pot and both opponents fold.

In heads up situations this would be a small C-bet for sure. My normal routine is to C-bet middle and bottom set, and check top set to let the opponent catch up. But in this situation my bet looks strong because I’m betting into two opponents who have relative position, and this flop is either hit or miss for them.

In this 3-way sandwich situation on an ace-high dry static flop should we consider checking bottom set?

There are so few turn cards that will lead to increased betting that wouldn’t call a 1/3 pot bet. What card do you want to see? You don’t really want pocket pairs greater than yours to see another card for free and be given the opportunity to cause you to lose a lot of money set over set. 98 and 87 are good possibilities for two pair. However, they will probably float a small bet as well. Ax is the most rational target but is Ax folding to a small bet? I don’t think so. Just one of those unlucky situations where you big hand, they have nothing and you can’t get them to put money in the pot with nothing. At least you didn’t have QQ. You would have lost for sure…

Yeah, agree with elvida. What are we hoping changes on the turn? Just that our opponents won’t believe us? I think this is a standard continue, just unlucky because it feels like a spot where we could/should be scooping a big pot.
