  • Another AQ Decision For Our Tournament Life Question

Posted by monkiesystem on November 19, 2022 at 1:39 pm

A few weeks ago I posted a spot in which we are faced with a call/fold ICM spot with AQo. This new one takes a different path, because the action was different. I’ve taken two nice, long showers and still can’t seem to wash the stink of this one off me. But maybe we can all learn from this one.

We are in a $1,700-entry MTT. There are about 75 players left, 50 are getting paid. We have about 40bb behind in the BB. Our stack is above average.

    Part 1:
It folds around to the CO, who just sat down a little while ago. We still don’t have a solid read on him. He has us covered but not by a whole lot. He opens to the standard 2.25bb open. The BU player, who also sat down a little while ago, jams 12bb. SB fold. We look down at AQs. We’re obviously not folding.
    Our options are:
    1. Call. This is less than one-third of our remaining stack, so it still leaves enough behind to keep us in reasonable shape if we lose the amount of this call. The CO can be assigned a typical wide CO range. Unless the CO has a powerhouse, he’ll need to fold to the 12bb jam and call. The downside is if we call, the CO could jam and present us with attractive odds to make a call that could send us packing without a prize. Maybe ICM pressure should make us more conservative in our decisions. What should be our plan if CO jams over the top?
    2. Min raise. This doesn’t make sense, as it takes up about half of our remaining chips. We’d be committed if CO jams. We might as well jam over the top if we raise at all.
    3. Jam. This isolates the BU and puts alot of pressure on CO and his wide range. The downside is, we’re also forcing him to play perfectly. Also, we’re starting to feel a bit of ICM pressure already. Maybe ICM pressure should force CO to think twice about his calling range.
    Should we call or jam?
    Part 2:
We call. The CO then jams over the top. We now have a decision for our tournament life in a moderate ICM situation to call and create a three-way jam with AQs.
    Now what should we do?
