Heads Up for a tournament win, how do we get all chips?
Posted by taylormaas on November 7, 2022 at 5:20 pmHey RecPoker Nation, I had this spot come up and was curious what everyone thinks we should do here. It’s a spot where we are heads-up for a tournament win, so ICM and everything is out the window, it’s all about getting the win. We get ourselves into a really good spot but are left with the every so important thought process of, how do we get all of our opponents chips. So what do you do here?
Heads up, 29 BBs effective. We are on the button with K9o and make our standard open to 2 BBs, they call.
Flop: Ks 7h 4h — they check, we bet 1.6 BBs, they raise us to 4 BBs.
I think we could make a case for raising ourselves but this feels like a very standard spot to just call, so thats what I did.
Turn 9s (Board is now K3 7h 4h 9s) — They bet into us 6 BBs. I think this is the interesting spot. Now we beat all their two pairs and are in a great spot vs anything but a set. So how do we proceed to get the most value here?
Raise All in? try to get called by their draws but fold out their bluffs?
Call? Hope that they continue their aggressive line on the river? And also hope that they don’t hit whatever draw they may be on?
And then if we call — What do we do if they jam on rivers when a heart or spade come? and what do we do if they just check to us?
And the bonus discussion — If this were instead at final 3 or 4 and there’s big ICM implications around busting, do we approach this spot differently?

This feels pretty standard until the turn. Part of the question for me is what will hearts do here? Are they more likely to call off a turn shove with hearts or bluff rivers when they miss? Maybe part of our decision making is which K9o we have. If we hold a heart of any kind, they are less likely to have the pair + flush draw, which would likely feel obligated to call a shove. So maybe if we hold a heart (which also blocks their path toward a flush if they hold hearts), we call and try to catch bluffs and then target Kx on our river bet. But if we don’t hold the heart, maybe we go for the shove and hope to get called by hands that just can’t find the fold (both Kx and hearts)?
But that is in a vacuum. This would also be very opponent dependent for me. We are almost never behind right now. So if I have any read on this player, it will shift my thinking. If the river bricks out and they will give up, we can lose a lot of value against some players. But there are others who will fold to big action here, even with a decent draw. I’m leaning toward the strategy above (whether I hold a heart), but going to adjust based on my opponent read.

In an ICM situation, I would just check/call, give them every opportunity to make a mistake, and also make them think twice when they want to bluff later.
On the turn the pot is 18BB when it gets to us, and we have a 23 BB stack. Is that right? If we call the 6BB, it sets up a pretty easy river shove for villain. Like you said, we are probably ahead right now, if you think they can shove their missed flush draws, I could see a call and shove the river if the flushes brick, and trying to see a showdown if they hit.
I personally like shoving the turn. He has to call 17 to win 58 meaning he needs 29%+ equity to call.
If he has a set or an open ender with a flush draw (T8, 86, or 65) he can call profitably.
But he also might call with just a flush draw for 19.6% equity, or a King with a higher kicker which has 6.5% equity, or a King with a lower kicker drawing dead. If you have been aggressive, they may even call with a 9.
If we call the turn, we are relying on their aggression to get it in. If we shove the turn, we are relying on their greed. -
With SPR on the river being ~ .70, I am just calling turn as V is likely going to be shoving for value with all kings and even lesser 1-pair hands for value. Villain will also have to bluff shove missed draws as played. I think this is a dream spot to sit back and catch the trophy 🙂
Never folding to a river shove heads-up even if the front or back door flush gets there
My question for you is if V checks back river, what is our bet sizing? I would think a shove is likely getting a fold so should we make a micro bet to either get called light or induce a bluff shove? Maybe something silly like 1.5 bbs?
