  • TOC mistake to min bet?

Posted by evilroy on November 28, 2022 at 11:42 am

Same TOC final table. We are 6th of 8 with 13BB folds to us UTG+2 with AQ offsuit. I raised to 2.15 and get no callers. Is this ok or was this a shove or fold? You can see hand 4:21 of TOC Final Table November 2022 on RecPoker YouTube channel

Next hand I kinda did the same thing (bet 2BB this time with QJ off). This one’s worse right? Just fold? Called by 2.1BB stack and lost this one.

We definitely have a raising range (unless we’re playing with limps, but let’s just discard that for now) that doesn’t involve shoving at this stack depth. First and quite minor point, but it does actually matter the shallower we get, just min-open. There is no reason to put more than a min-bet when we are this shallow. We’re just burning chips the times we fold and we accomplish very little otherwise with this.

But beyond that sidenote, the real question is where does AQo fall? In pure theory land, this holding is a shove. Both RTP and GTO Wizard agree. But do note that there are lots of hands in our range that prefer the min-open to the shove. But in a vacuum, this hand is about as pure a shove as we can find. But there are potentially reasons to shift to a min-open with this hand depending on the players behind us. If we have players who are frequently attacking opens, this becomes an interesting hand to trap with.
