ICM in the home game

Hi. I’ve been reading Dara O’Kearney’s book on ICM and it occurred to me that our home game is a good chance to practice this. One thing I didn’t find in the book is a way to estimate when ICM begins to take effect. I’m wondering if anyone has run some of our typical home game scenarios through ICMizer or HRC. For example, should we be taking ICM into account from the get go? To what extent? Thanks.

Hi George. We just finished Endgame Poker Strategy by Dara O’Kearney and Barry Carter in December. All of the sessions are available to access for premium members in the Book Study Group. In response to your question ICM really isn’t a factor in a winner-takes-all tournament. Although there are payouts when you get to the final table the real prize is the bronze pin. In this scenario you can look at ICM spots, but the other players at the table will not necessarily be thinking in terms of ICM. A quote from Chapter 3: Bubble Factor “When the first place prize is large enough it becomes more important to take risks for 1st place than it is to ladder to one of the other payouts. It becomes closer to a Winner-Takes-All tournament where the correct strategy is to play closer to ChipEV.”

Thanks! I didn’t know about bronze pins.

FWIW, I listened to an episode of the Thinking Poker podcast where they interviewed a guy from GTO Wizard who said his research indicates that ICM begins impacting optimal play when there about 3X the number of cashing players still alive, or typically when about 50-67% of the field has been eliminated.

There is a great video explaining this by the same guy that was on the Thinking Poker Podcast. (29) You’re Playing Tournaments Wrong! Here’s why – YouTube
