Aloha, I’m Scott Lum, a dedicated full-time poker player. While I can’t call myself a poker pro, yet I’ve been playing and studying poker intensively since retiring. I’m excited to join RecPoker to help develop an exciting new project.

Half of my study focuses on how elite athletes and top performers excel in their fields and how to apply those techniques to poker training. I’m delving into their mental training and physical practice, and I’m also incorporating methods from martial arts, world philosophies, and business productivity experts to create learning models which I can integrate with my poker training. My goal is to share my journey with you as I experiment and discover new ways to improve as a poker player.

I started playing poker 20 years ago, when my wife and I started hosting a monthly $5 home game. After two years of diligent study, I began dominating our home games and realized that poker was a skill game and not just a fun card game. Over the next several years, I played in a free bar league, small-stakes restaurant league, and $4/8 Limit cash games at a local casino.

When the pandemic hit, I was a losing cash game player and a break-even tournament player. I seized the opportunity to study the game more intensively. Our bar league members formed an online private group, playing 2-3 times per day. This free but competitive environment introduced me to the wealth of poker data available through HUDs, which opened new learning avenues and strategy experimentation. I used the data to try out various playing styles, identify the most effective approaches, and develop exploitive strategies to counter different poker profiles. Additionally, I produced a series of online webinars for the league to teach poker basics and share insights how to translate the online experience to the live games.

Once live poker resumed, I made the final table in several Vegas tournaments and saw a significant improvement in my cash game performance. I now make multiple trips to Vegas each year and travel to other series, using poker as an excuse to explore the country and the world.

I’m thrilled to be part of the RecPoker community and look forward to connecting with all of you.
