  • $88 APT Bounty – What do you think they have? What Would You do?

Posted by dingo on March 8, 2023 at 5:36 pm

    Hello guys,

This is a hand from online last sunday where I was approaching the bubble for the money in the $88 APT Bounty Event.

The situation is we are awhile off the money but, I have collected roughly $60 worth of bounties throughout the course of the game so far and the player to my direct left has been on the same table since level 1 so we have some history of battling hands, this player has roughly $800k of winnings on Natural8 so I would put them into the catagoury of compotent/know what they are doing.

The hand starts off at 7k/14k/14k (ante).

190k stack – Button – action previously folds to you.

    55 diamond club

    I Open 42.5k
SB 3bet 90k (effective 175k, bounty worth $16.5), BB folds
I close the action by calling

    Flop 10106 diamond club club
    I check
    SB bet 33k
    I call

    Turn 8 heart (101068 dcch)
    I check
SB tanks and uses time bank, declares all in.

Here is where I would love to talk about the stratergy and ask what you would have done differently preflop, post flop or would have done something differently by leading the turn?

Do you fold pocket 5s on the button in a bounty game when smallblind 3bets you and they are supposed to be wide? The player has shown tendancies of understanding GTO play, he has balanced the nuts and bluffs on rivers so is capable. I would identify him as a solid online reg who plays positon very well.

I will update this post in a few days time with the rest of the run out and my action, I was just wondering what peoples lines are here because while I know the result I feel like I made the incorrect choice with how I played this hand all togther.

Probably need to know how close the bubble is to make any specific recommendations, but ….

On the button with 14BB, with the Jones’ , my two choices are fold or go all-in. Your hand doesn’t play well post-flop unless you hit a set.

If you are on the bubble, I’d lean towards folding, even in a PKO situation.

If you are the effective stack, I’d be looking for reasons not to fold, folding being the default, because your stack isn’t threatening the remaining players.

If you cover the other stacks, I’d be looking for reasons to fold, the default being a jam, because your stack is mighty enough to give other players pause.

As played, I’d be check folding on this flop. Your hand is not strong enough to withstand any pressure in a guessing situation.

Frankly, in this situation, your hand is not strong enough to simply raise and you’re not deep enough to withstand a thinking players pressure post-flop. This would be the reason for the fold/jam line.

The OR is questionable given that your friend here is fold equity. It is compounded by the big size. I think that the call of the 3b! is not advisable as you have reduced the SPR to ~1 and will cripple your stack, seemingly to set mine, if you don’t hit. It is unlikely that you will have top pair or an overpair on the flop, so your decisions will all be tough. On the flop you call a tiny bet, leaving you pretty much nothing (4 bb/27% pot) on Turn. So you have committed yourself. The question is, what do you beat? Just semi bluff flush draws (8 outs), 22-44 (2 outs), overcards (6 outs) and air (may still have two live cards). I think that BChip got it right, this should be a jam as an open, or if you want to try to induce a larger pot with a strong hand then you should jam over the top of the SB. Collect the fold equity pre, but recognize that you are in deep trouble most of the time you are called and give yourself the opportunity to see all 5 cards post.
