  • AA in a Satellite

With 27BB and AA UTG in a 10-handed live satellite not near the bubble, is it better to open raise to 2.5BB or shove?

We might even be able to min open depending on other stack sizes, but I much prefer opening to shoving. Since we’re nowhere near the bubble, we’re happy to get this one in with anyone who messes with us. We’re missing out capitalizing on the best preflop hand in poker if we shove here.

I can’t really come up with a good scenario to ever open shove this hand when we are this deep. Even on the stone satellite bubble with 27bb. At that depth and at that point, we likely cover many other players, so we’re opening it and calling off against the shorter opponents—or if we have a bunch of players that cover us to our left while there are still a bunch of short stacks around, we can just open fold this hand with 27bb.

We might shove over the top of an open with this hand to isolate and collect chips, but I can’t ever see open shoving when we are this deep.

Thanks. I opened with 2.5BB and got one caller. The flop was something like Q85 rainbow. I shoved, got called, a Q came on the river and villain held a Q.

Agree that I prefer an open of 2bb-2.5bb with AA here. We want to extract value with our strong hands. The value of our premium hands is that it is more often the best hand when we go to showdown. If we shove, we’re mostly going to get everyone to fold and we never get to showdown. Without a showdown, hands like 72, J4o, and AA are all equal. This is not to say that you should be shoving with 72, but that AA is better used as a hand that will get V to call with hands that we beat.
