  • Boosting attendance at my home game

Posted by yamel on July 20, 2020 at 10:30 am

I shifted my monthly game to online with the local dads I used to grill with since March and got 15-20 players for monthly tournaments. Since a lot of people had their offices closed, people started playing nightly cash games and asking for tournaments several times a week. My home game had quite the boom in May and June with nightly games. Fast forward to now and we only get games 2-3 nights per week and no longer have full tables. I’ve kept the stakes low and don’t rake to get more players and started to expand recruiting to people from home games I used to run in other cities to take advantage of it being online. Also tracking nightly winners and posting player of the week accomplishments in our slack group. My latest thought is to get more west coast players since they would play later and not need to go to sleep as early…

Any other ideas to increase interest in virtual home games?

Adding to the player pool is ideal if you can keep the jerks out lol! We have talked about having a space here at rec.poker to promote home games or maybe to help different organizers share details or strategies – what would be most helpful do you think? A forum like this is a good start, but I like the idea of tracking results, poker players are so competitive!

Maybe a page with charts or graphs for your home game as a whole or for individual players? How easy is it to import results and data from your playing platform? John Somsky tracks all our data and publishes daily updates (wow) and it is def fun to see the results scroll by and see who won. The recent YTD results post also got a lot of buzz. But that is a lot of work if it’s not set up by some genius programming team like @PokerGeekMN and @WebsiteMark lol

Great thoughts Jim. Anyone wanting to join a rake free low stakes online club just DM me. I would welcome it as a challenge to play against my friends here and a way to promote Rec.poker a bit for those that take the game too seriously like we do.

I love the idea of improving stats. So far what I’ve done is have a separate slack channel for brags/beats and every week I post winners of nightly cash games or tourneys. Then name a player of the week based on most $ won. I started texting congrats to nightly cash game winners (richman badge) and people asked who was the biggest donator (fish badge)…but I keep it to these high level stats as to not marginalize anyone. I switched the text updates to a slack group so I can post stats to a channel that only people that care can check in on. There are definitely a few of the regulars that try a little harder to get badges and player of the week mentions so that definitely helps.

Curious to hear what others do in their games and how I could improve my stats or grow my player pool. Happy to use the new site in whatever way makes sense.

Easiest way is affiliate and referral programs. Costs you revenue though. Also, moving the game to a platform with unions is a a fast way to do it. Otherwise, good old fashioned word of mouth and social media leg work. In Colorado there are several Facebook communities for local poker players and leagues to advertise and look for games. Check and see what is available in your area.

thanks for the thoughts….I don’t run the club for a profit, so unions and referral programs wouldn’t make sense, there is no revenue to share. I just like having an accessible game on a regular basis to keep my skills sharp until a casino opens…and not having to worry about beating a rake makes everything so much easier, more flexibility to practice more moves, and make a little on the side as well….

Good idea on the social media leg work – I’ll see what is available around here, but my worry would be running into people that are too random – I think I rather have someone vouch or refer someone…thinking out loud maybe existing players need to put some work into keeping the club thriving.

I am a big fan of the existing membership owning the future success of the club!
