  • Can I count on V to keep betting into my set?

Posted by websitemark on February 25, 2021 at 10:41 pm

Figured I’d take a quick break from working on the site and actually post a hand history in it. Let’s go!

In this hand, I try an unorthodox line and would love your thoughts on it.

    No Limit Hold’em $0.01/$0.02
    ACR
    6 players

    Stacks:
    BTN – BTN ($4.43)
    BB – Hero ($3.00)

Preflop: ($0.03, 6 players) Hero is BB with 5♣ 5♠
3 folds, BTN raises to $0.05, 1 fold, Hero calls $0.03

Feel pretty comfortable with a call here, hoping to hit a set with my low pair. Any arguments for 3-betting these pocket fives? This opponent and I have about 700 hands between us and they are 20%VPIP / 16%PFR / 67%AGG in that span.

    Flop: J♥ 5♦ Q♠ ($0.11, 2 players – Hero: $2.95, BTN: $4.38)
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.08, Hero calls $0.08

Awesome! Spiked a 5 and villain c-bets. I’m thinking I want to get a lot of chips in… but when and how? I elect to call here since (1) I’m not too worried about the turn on this rainbow board and (2) a check-raise might blow them off the hand. Let’s see what happens.

    Turn: 9♥ ($0.27, 2 players – Hero: $2.87, BTN: $4.30)

Kinda straighty and it creates a backdoor heart draw, but I feel like there are a lot of cards other than Ks and Ts in the BTN’s opening range so I’m probably still ahead. Rather than risking a check-check turn, I get weird and donk-lead for 1/2-pot. I figured if they have something like Qx, Jx, or a draw, they’ll still call a fishy out-of-flow bet, but might have otherwise checked for pot control.

Hero bets $0.13, BTN calls $0.13

    River: Q♣ ($0.53, 2 players – Hero: $2.74, BTN: $4.17)

If they have something like AJ, J9, or a busted heart draw, I don’t think they’ll call any bet I put in. If they do have a Q, then they’re going to bet no matter. They might also bluff with something like A5 or AK if I let them. For those reasons, I actually decide to check my boat on the river.

Hero checks, BTN bets $0.53, Hero raises to $2.74 (all-in), BTN calls $2.21

    Total Pot: $6.01
Hero shows 5♣ 5♠ (a full house, Fives full of Queens [5s 5d 5c Qs Qc])
BTN shows K♦ Q♦ (three of a kind, Set of Queens [Qs Qd Qc Kd Jh])

Hero wins $5.71 from main pot

Obviously it worked in this instance (yay!), but I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the donk lead on the turn. Do you just check in flow most of the time and accept that sometimes it’ll check through? I do most of the time, but thought I’d go for it on this specific runout.

    Cheers!

IMO, You should be raising the flop here. The QJ5 flop is so great for you, the villain can have so many made hands or solid draws, we should just start getting the money in now. And in practice, it accomplishing the same thing as your turn lead — just a street earlier. After that, you take the lead and keep the lead.

As it played out, you won all the chips so well played.
