  • Can you fold bottom set?

Posted by yamel on July 10, 2020 at 9:01 am

4 handed .1/.2 cash game $21 effective.  V is a loose player that likes to call down when draws miss, does not bluff much, and is a big winner in this game.

limps around to me in BB with 55 (@FiveByFive )

[.8] 8c 5h 7s  sb checks, I check, utg .8, btn calls, sb calls, I raise 2.4, only btn calls

[7.2] Qh I bet 5.20, button raises to 10.4 (has 8.48 behind and i cover)

In the moment I freaked out and raised, but this morning thinking we can’t  really get called by worse and should call hoping for river to pair board or check through.  Not too many overpairs in range since it was a limped pot and I’m only ahead of two pair type hands that wouldn’t call, right?

Can anyone find a fold? against what type of player?

I agree completely that with that board and action with bottom set you are probably not getting called by worse OFTEN ENOUGH to make it worth the 3bet shove on the turn. Ditto for when to call/fold – He could make that flop bet and turn raise with A8h for instance or a few other combos of pair+draw if we really wanted to try to build out his range with some other hands you’re ahead of, but even then the real question is – in the long run, is he doing it with ENOUGH of his range to make it a profitable continuing spot? I don’t mind folding to some bluffs in a betting or raising range that is mostly value hands if I know he’s not bluffing there enough in the long run, or with enough combos to make my call profitable,

You got my heart a flutter with a 55 set getting run down. Injustice.

But I think your turn assessment is correct. In order for me to fold in this spot, I’d need to know V is incapable of overvaluing something like AQ or bluffing with some of their 6x combos (they’d need to be capable of calling the preflop raise with A6, 67, 56 suiteds of the world). They might also be the type of player that can show up with two pair here, 78 being the most likely combo.

Since they do show up with 64, they do seem like that type of player. So if I’m up against a player that can have all that, I’m happily calling. If the board pairs, I’m getting stacks in on the river. If it doesn’t, I’m hoping to check down, but likely still sigh calling if I have to.

    Unfortunately I’m going broke here.

But where I play it differently is on the turn. The Qh should do nothing to our opponents hand except for improve some hands to two pair. Meaning, the BTN called us on the flop and then decided to raise on the turn, the only hands that improved are Q8/Q7/Q5 (and I guess if they limped QQ), so either they were trapping or they had one of those hands. When they raise here, the flag gets raised and I’m worried about some of those monsters. So I’d go into calling mode the rest of the way, which would (most likely) end up the same way on the river.
