  • final table hand played all wrong -let’s learn from my mistakes

Posted by de-niceaces on January 26, 2022 at 9:41 pm

Let’s say I made a mistake RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE I am not sure what I was thinking given my cards. Just going for a fold and RIGHT away I know a min raise isn’t going to get me that outcome. I think this is one of many mistakes…I am not sad about thinking my SB move will work here with the hand —but my implementation was poor and resulted in tougher decisions later and certianly cost me some CHIPS. Would think this is fun to analyze and get feedback on .

FINAL TABLE ….Pays out 4 seats so we are ON THE BUBBLE as well. Even with my poor playing I did end up 4th but I do think this hand cost me the higher payout or even the win. Tournement poker where EVERY DARN HAND and EVERY miscalculated hand can be THE Beginning of the downward spiral. It is never just one hand that does it —it is a series of decisions strung together.

I would love to find someone to go over a full tournament one day and just dig in to those plays that leak the chips and leave my all in doubling FOR LESS because of it.

A couple of things before the hand: You said it pays out 4 SEATS, is this a satellite? If so it plays very differently than a normal tournament would. I’m actually going to assume that it is not a satellite because of your comment “cost you a higher payout”.

On to the Hand: We have 32 BBs and are essentially tied for 4th place. On the FT, with pay jumps looming, our strategy should be to play tight. Especially when everyone is relatively deep stacked. There’s no need to get into crazy hands here so let’s focus on playing in position, with good holdings, and try to control the pot size as much as we can. And coincidentally, we end up failing on all 3 things here.

Preflop: we have a limp from the button and we decide to min-raise from the SB. I do not like this one bit. 76o isn’t really that good of a hand. So what are we trying to accomplish in this spot? bluff them off a worse hand? Well 1 more BB isn’t going to do that. Get value from them preflop? We don’t have a good hand so we can’t really be trying to get value. Which proves to be true when both opponents call. I would have just limped from the SB.

Flop: You actually get a really good flop for your exact hand. But your hand doesn’t have a ton of strength to it and is very vulnerable to weird hands like JT/Q8/etc. that can hit a better pair than you. I love the continuation bet, however I might want to size up very slightly to like 1600-1800, but that is nitpicky from me.

Turn: Again, I like your action. Checking here is the smart play, we bet previously to get our opponent to fold equity that they might not know they have. however, when they call they usually have something and our hand strength vs that calling range is very much in the middle. Meaning something like half the time we are winning and half we are losing. This is a textbook check/call spot.

River: I feel like you got tricked. The 7 seems good, but all it does is help you beat hands like a pair of 6s that have a better kicker than you. You already had two pair, so going from Ks and 6s to Ks and 7s isn’t really like much changed. For all the same reasons above, this is a textbook check/call spot on the river. You are hoping to beat total bluffs and when you opponent had a 6 in their hand.

Great post @De-niceaces and thanks for sharing a spot we all may find something to improve from! I think Taylor is right on the money about sizing and lines (like usual) so one other question I had was about your time bank – you say after you made the move, you knew immediately that it wasn’t going to work. How much of your time bank did you use? Given that you are on the bubble (or really any time the decisions really matter), there’s something to be said about taking a little extra time with each decision so that you can eliminate some “errors of haste” and that feeling of insta-regret we all get after we click the action from time to time.

For your full tourney review, bring a hand history to my PokerTracker Review Group I host on some Saturday afternoons and we can go over the whole thing with the group and give you some personalized feedback about your decisions in real time! You can find it by joining the “Group” for it – click on Groups on that red bar to the left of your screen and look for Jim’s PT4 Review Group. Hope to see you soon!
