  • Home Game Value OOP Scary Turn

Posted by jim on August 31, 2020 at 8:24 am

So I was playing in the home game the other night and just getting slapped in the face with the deck, in the good way – every time I 3bet, the flop was just what I needed. This hand with @JBach71 was no exception.

I typically cbet to a larger sizing when OOP, and when this turn comes I feel like it just SMACKS the calling range so strongly that I would have to bet a really big sizing to get hands with draw equity to fold, and many of the foe’s holdings already improved to a made hand better than TPTK on this turn. So when I see the turn card, I decide my hand is not going to get called by three value bets, and the question is should we bet now or on the river?

Betting the turn and checking river makes sense because you can get value from draws on the turn and then decide how to play river if the foe bets after you check. But checking the river after that action basically invites a bluff, so that’s no fun, plus how do you respond when they raise the turn?

I elected to X turn and lead river on bricks, X/Evaluate on other rivers. 4h is awfully bricky, so I led out pretty small hoping to get called by a one-pair hand and planning to fold to some shoves after timebanking for long enough to clean the vomit out of my mouth. Foe clicks it back and we are in a tough spot with many of the hands we are stabbing here with as a bluff or thinner value – we can’t call with all the worse hands we have here, so I like this post-flop line as a bluff vs my post-flop line when I’ve shown weakness on the turn like I did. When foe is holding JT in this exact spot I think just calling the small bet is better, the raise isn’t really a “value raise” because it’s not getting called by much worse, and it’s too strong a hand to be a natural “bluff candidate” – but I love this clickback with an unpaired hand like TX that blocks my nuts but has no showdown value. I think you can call with JT with top pair there to win vs my AK type hands that stab the river. Fun hand to play, I was very unsure how to respond to your river raise!

I was really liking my hand after the turn with top pair and open-ended to the straight. I was thinking you likely had AK and didn’t see lots of jacks in your range, hence the re-raise on the river. Wonder if you might have folded to a shove…or just not asking if you had AK…which gave away the strength of my hand….

Ya I wonder what would have happened if either one of us bet the turn? You probably call most turn bet sizings, right? If I checked and you bet the turn that might have put me in a weird spot and I’m more likely to fold to your river shove for sure. I dunno about the tabletalk because it sounded strong to me! I love these unusual spots.

    Interesting river spot for sure.

    Preflop:

Hero sb AcJs. I like the 3bet vs a CO open from a bigger stack. CO will have a wide range and aren’t letting the BB in cheaply. There is a small risk if you think BB is capable of jamming wide as the 30bb stack is a good size for it.

    Flop: 3d Jc 8h Pot: 1776

    Hero cbets 1100.

Hero choses to bet ~62% pot. The board is coordinated with flush and straight draws. This sizing is good in a single raise pot. But I prefer a smaller cbet (30%-40%) in a 3bet pot. I think a bet of 700 is good.

    Turn: 9d [3d Jc 8h]

This card favors CO. 3bet calling range includes a lot of middle pairs (88,99,TT). A small bet could be fine, but I like the check here.

    River: 4h [ 3d Jc 8h 9d]

This river card doesn’t change much. This is a very similar spot to the turn. Either check or bet small for value. I think it depends on your read of CO. Which is more likely from CO: Paying off your value bet or betting with a bluff/over valued hand after a check?

After the click back, it’s a sigh call given the pot odds.

For future reference, if I want to Jim to call my river bet, I’m typing “ak?” in the chat.
