Interesting open… easy call?
Posted by yamel on October 16, 2020 at 9:15 am1-3 NL $1000 effective stacks (interesting hand from live casino game discussed on a call in show I like to watch)
UTG limps, MP1 limps, Hero on BTN with Kc4c raises to $20, BB calls, both limpers call (4 ways)
[$80] Flop: Ks Jc 2c
Checks to hero who bets $50, BB calls, UTG calls, MP1 folds
[$230] Turn: Ks Jc 2c 4h
Checks to hero bets $100, BB folds, UTG check raise to $250 Hero calls
[$730] River: Ks Jc 2c 4h Ah
UTG bets $325 Hero…?
Does this open make sense in a passive game with few 3 bets? One argument is that that 10% rake up to $6max encourages us to play bigger pots. Also, if people call very wide and will fold to aggression, we can find ways to win without showdown.
In this case, I think UTG representing better than a pair with the XR turn followed by the lead on river. Could be KJ or 22 for value, but also some missed flushes or weak pairs hoping for a fold. Seems like AK wouldn’t limp call preflop…what else are you thinking?

Preflop: On the button vs 2 limpers, I think this is a raise or fold spot for Hero. I like having some preflop fold equity and taking the lead. K4s doesn’t play that well multi-way. We can comfortably fold if someone 3-bets. I feel hands like AXs and smaller connectors (54s, 65s) work better as overlimps.
Flop:
UTG calls after BB calls the Hero cbet of $50. I think call by the UTG caps his range. Both Hero and BB have shown that they have something. Hero bet into 2 players. BB called with UTG still to act. With possible straight and flush draws, most players would raise with two pair+.
Turn:
Hero is in a tough spot facing this check raise. Having the 4, Hero blocks the hands that improve: J4, 44, 24. This is a clear call.
River:
Even thought the A river should be better for Hero’s range, UTG continues to bet. If UTG was bluffing with 5c3c, he just made a straight.
I think this is a sigh call.

Thanks for the thoughts…I had rolled it back to what the pre-flop action says, but had not considered that the flop call caps UTG with people left to act and a flush draw out there…good stuff!
