less conventional betting lines
Hi gang, I want to do a podcast episode on less conventional betting lines – nothing crazy, just looking at things like donks, blocker bets, floats, probes, etc – not going to talk about cbets or raises, just less-common betting lines.
How often do you all take these lines?
Float bets are when the OOP player had a chance to continuation-bet (C!) and checked instead (weakening their range and creating more of an incentive for the IP player to bet with some of their range)
Probe bets are when the IP player had a chance to C! on the previous street but checked behind, giving the OOP player the same incentive to lead out on the next street
Donk bets are anytime the non-aggressor on the previous street leads into the aggressor, removing their ability to C! This can happen on any street postflop.
Blocker bets are slightly different, they are typically made be the OOP player to a smaller sizing than they think the IP player might choose to use. This ‘sets the price’ for the street, and is often employed with thin value holdings that do not want to face a large bet.
So – how often you you all use these lines, and what are the circumstances that make for good opportunities to take these lines? As a HUD player, I really only donk and float and probe according to the frequencies of my foes. If they fold a lot to those actions, I bluff a lot. If they do not fold a lot, I value bet a lot. I should probably be tying this more explicitly to board textures and the ranges that intersect with them, but that is probably more subconscious on my part in these spots. I don’t tend to use blocker bets as often as I should, and that is something I’d like to work on more in 2022 – targeting different parts of my foe’s range with different best sizes.

Isn’t a Blocker bet just a Donk bet with a fancy name? From the IP perspective, what is the difference?
