  • Limpers – they all do our heads in!!!!!!!

    Limpers!!!

    They do my head in, they get there with absolute garbage and I go on tilt for life.

    The last couple of live tournaments that I have been to ($110 and $165 buy in) – I have found myself at tables with a lot of fairly passive players.

    I am sure I set fire to my stack as I got into the habit of just limping behind after a couple of people had already done so.

    Should we see ourselves playing where we might not normally;

    Unsuited broadway like QJ, 10J

    Suited KX

    Connected unsuited cards like 78, 89, 910

    What does limpers do our pre flop strategy when we are;

    30 bb+

    20 – 30bb

    I am fairly comfortable with less than 20 as I will just jam – short stack ninja style and try to scoop the blinds + limpers.

    Another problem also comes when we are at these passive types of tables and you have 2 limpers in front raise to say 4x and everyone calls.

    Any suggestions on what to do there?

    Tighten up and play straightforward?

    Please forward all communication to my local psychiatric ward……

    @FiveByFive – a suggestion for a seminar?

    These spots are faced by almost every rec player known to man as the stakes we all play.

    Great topic….I’m no expert, but here are a few thoughts.

    I wouldn’t let it get in your head…just think of it as extra blinds in the pot, so when you do decide to get involved, there is more for you to win.

    Just b/c everyone else does a cascade of limping, you shouldn’t widen your range and start limping behind…if we fall into that trap we are playing bingo with everyone else and hoping to hit.

    My approach is more keeping my range fairly consistent most of the time. If the first limper is the tricky kind (likely to limp re-raise based on previous hands) I may tighten my range even more. This way you are confident your range is stronger than limpers when you do get involved and can just play your normal cards, size up your raise a bit and dominate long term with good post flop play. Just make sure the range you play for an open is stronger than that first limper’s range based on player type and position he opened from. (e.g. I’m less likely to raise a UTG limper than a MP limper)

    If you are in the blinds or button and have a hand that plays really well multi-way (e.g. Ax suited, Kx suited, pair) where you know you can over flush someone, hit a set, etc. then it would be fine to limp behind b/c you’ll have position post flop or have a price from the blinds and it will be clear if you connected with the flop.

    Another thing to keep in mind is that our equity drops significantly when we are multi-way, so we don’t have to win nearly as often as heads up. If you are seeing limped pots 5 ways, you only expect to take it down 1/5 times…so plenty of room to fold when you don’t connect.
