  • Open Raise Spots

Posted by arw on April 3, 2022 at 7:56 am

    @Jim @TaylorMaas @Binkley @PetVet @PokerGeekMN

It’s the first hand of a tournament. (no reads)

Everyone starts with 10k and blinds are 100/100

For each spot, it folds to you and these are your possible actions:

    a) Fold

    b) Call 100

    c) Raise 200

    d) Raise 300

You may consider a fold UTG with QJs otherwise d for everything else.

Ok, now suppose you open to 300 for all these hands.

Your opponent 3-bets you to 1,000.

    What is your action?

    a. Fold

    b. Call 700 more

    c. 4-bet to 2,500

    d. 4-bet all in for 9,700

Most of these are folds to a 3-bet. It depends on our opponent’s position on the ATs hand. I may call a raise from the blinds but fold to a raise from someone IP. Another thought on the initial post. I may decide to play tighter during the initial round or two of the tournament. It is important to get a read on our opponents before we start opening the hands on the fringe of our range.

This is when chaos theory enters the beautiful game of poker.

    AKA “It Depends”.

What is the buy-in and/or the implied skill level of opponent(s)?
Is villain in BB or BN?
Are they wearing a John Deere or Titleist hat?
Are they holding their pinky to their lips like Dr Evil?
Is she watching the game? Arguing on the phone?
What type of table image do we want to have?
What day of the week is it?
    Is it a holiday?
Which convention is in town? Bikers staring at Cowboys laughing at Hippies?
    What’s the weather outside?
    What’s the weather inside?
Is my astrology sign coinciding with the moon phase?

Ignoring these, because we need to start simple and gradually complicate things, here we go.

    1. Call or fold to a 3bet UTG w/ 66. Sometimes with under 30BB you can bluff shove 66.
    2. Call a 3bet UTG w/ ATs 100 BB effective. Can start to sometimes 4bet shove ATs under 20BB.
    3. With AQo in EP- Call a 3bet IP, fold OOP.
    4. Always call QJs to a 3bet any position, any stack size (except in ICM situations.)

    5. In the HJ w/ 33- Call IP, fold OOP.
    6. In the HJ w/ A7s- Call IP, raise OOP. Fold A7s to a 3bet when in EP, while in the CO we can mix in some aggression against a froggy SB.
    7. Fold. Only call a preflop 3bet w/ JTo from the BN and SB any stack size.

    8. In the BN w/ A2s 100BBs effective Call a 3bet, but can mix in aggression with smaller stacks.
    9. Q8o is a bluff open, always a fold to any aggression preflop.
    10. With K9s you can open and call a 3bet with any stack size from HJ, CO, and BN.

    No. 1 66 call 3 bet.

    No. 2 A10s call 3 bet.

No 3. AQo A tricky spot. I don’t mind folding here to early position 3 better with no reads. with reads you can mix between 4 bet, call or fold.

No 4. QJs Fold to early position 3 betters and call to late position and blinds.

    No 5 33 . call and flop a set.

No 6 A7s I don’t mind folding this to 3 bet but calling 3 bet coming from the blinds.

No. 7 J10o Easy fold with this off suit holding.

    No. 8 A2s call 3 bet.

No 9 Q8o Pretend you have a decision even though you have an easy fold.

    No 10 K9s Call 3 bet

For the open — I’m opening almost all of these hands. Only exception is JTo from the HJ, I’d fold that. And for sizing, I would go 250. But if I can only choose 200 or 300, I prefer 300 when we are 100 BB deep.

Also — WHERE the 3-bet comes from is really important.

UTG vs a 3-bet, I’ll call all those options.

HJ vs a 3-bet, I’ll call the 33 (I guess) and fold the A7s. And assuming I opened the JTo, that’s a very easy fold.

    Button vs a 3-bet, Call the A2s and K9s, fold the Q8o.
