  • Playing suited connectors

Posted by 7high11 on December 4, 2022 at 9:22 am

I’ve noticed one of the weakest parts of my game is playing (or not playing as the case may be) suited connectors. Because I’m not confident of my ability to play them post flop I often make the “dreaded compromise” of limping with them, folding if raised into, and hoping to hit the flop when not. Then I play them straight forward depending of if I smash the flop or not. I know this is not the correct way, but I’m struggling based on hands like this one.

$5 Ignition MTT $3k guarantee. 8 players 300/600 blinds., 60 ante. This is about 1/2 hour after the 4 hour registration closed. I late registered with about 1/2 left and that was still with 30BB. Average stack in the tournament is about 60 BB. I have 28 BB. Probably roughly around the bubble, but the $8 min cash was not a driving force for me either way.

    I’m on the Button with 7c 6c

    Fold

    Fold

Limp (MP): 102.02 BB (I have 18 hands on him…he is a 50/6/0, but I can’t read too much into that in 18 hands other than a tendency to maybe be a little loose/passive)

    Fold

    Limp (CO): 76.43 BB

    <font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>I raise to 4x (2400) with 7c6c (While I often limp this from another position, I decided to raise from the </font>button<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”> into 2 limpers)</font>

<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>Both blinds fold. MP calls, CO folds. 6780 in the pot, I have 14,555 behind(24 BB) MP has me covered well covered with 99BB</font>

Flop 2:club: 3:club: 7:heart: giving me TP with a small flush draw and back door gutter MP checks. I bet 2850 (42% pot). MP calls. 12,480 in the pot. I’m left with 11,705 behind, so a less than 1:1 SPR. Didn’t plan that all that well!

Turn is the As for 2c,3c,7h,As

Now you have to understand…at this level people have a very hard time throwing any Ace away preflop. Many of them will routinely limp/call with virtually every ace.

CO checks, I check. I now no longer have any straight draw.

<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>River is the 4d for As for 2c,3c,7h,As, 4d. I’m left with second pair, lousy kicker. He bets 2632 into 12480 (21%). I have no idea where I am at this point, and I fold. I find out later from PT4 he had Ac6h, so my hunch about him having an Ace </font>turned<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”> out to be correct (this time). He started with a backdoor wheel and a backdoor nut flush draw.</font>

<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>This is typically how it goes for me with suited connectors. I feel I am playing them poorly. Should I have even been in the hand? Should the flop bet been smaller (or maybe even bigger)? Should I have barreled? Should I have folded </font>given<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”> the pot odds?</font>

    HELP! 🙃
