  • Range Advantage “Semantics”

Had an insight this morning that I thought I would share. I’m sure many of you already know this, but it was another evolution in my thinking, so I’d thought I’d share it if is helpful to anyone.

I was in a very typical spot. The tourney details and players don’t really matter here. Assume both players are 100 BB. I raised 2.5X from UTG. All fold and a call from the button. Flop is K73 rainbow. Let’s ignore the 7 and 3 for the purpose of this discussion. Just in trying to determine if he had a K I said to myself “I have range advantage because I have more kings”. But when I thought a few seconds further I questioned if that was right. I knew I had more top hands with kings, but did I really have more Kings?

So later I went to Flopzilla. Using a published GTO range for the spot I have K9s+ and KQo+ for a total of 50 combos. He has every Broadway K and every suited K except AK and KK. That’s 56 combos!

My insight then was that is is not correct to say “I have more Kings in my range” but rather “A greater percentage of my range is made up of Kings than his” and that is where my “range advantage” truly lies.

Examining the full ranges, my 50 combos with K make up roughly 27% of my total range of 188 combos. His 56 combos makes up only roughly 13 of his 442 combos. So I’m twice as likely to have a king at that point.
