  • Reasons to Play — Homework

“Some look for reasons to fold, others look for reasons to play”

I found this quote on the internet with a DNegs picture. Take that info as you will.

As I play a hand, I evaluate the situation and try to make the best possible play. When the decision is close, I look at my options and try to reason things out.

    • Reasons to Fold
    • Reasons to Call
    • Reasons to Bet
    • Reasons to Raise

I intentionally left that section blank. The beauty of a blank canvas is that you can make it your own. I want you to develop your own reasons.

Next, once you have that list for each action, identify the trends.

Does your list focus on one thing or many things?

What things are the most important to consider?

    • your hand strength?
    • your opponent’s tendencies?
    • your position during the hand?
    • your chip stack? their chip stack?
    • the tournament status (ICM, money bubble, table image)

    Share your list

-Your range (determined by position, chip stack, ICM, and player profile).
-Your opponents’ perceived range (The hardest part of the game, as villains intentionally “play bingo” with non-GTO ranges).
    -How those ranges interact.
-Where your hand falls within that interaction.
-The level at which you think your opponent is considering the above 4.

Generally, early in the tournament and right after the bubble bursting, I am looking for reasons to play, as opponents are more likely to punt (take higher risks) in those times.
In high ICM situations, like right before the money bubble and from the final table bubble on to the end, I am looking for reasons to fold, as risk premium must be added to your equity and other players are acting in-kind.
