  • Satellite Spot

Live satellite. Down to 9 players vying for four seats. Hero is the short-stack with 4.125BB in CO with Q8♣︎ and the very active chip leader to my left on the BTN. LJ, whom I’ve seen bet-fold in several recent hands, opens with 2.5 BB. I tank a while, considered that I had no fold equity vs the BTN or initial raiser, the latter of whom I have to assume I am far behind. I folded.

    Misplayed or played correctly?

You are right you have no fold equity but I still wouldn’t mind a jam here. Best case is the BN raises to isolate and the LJ folds leaving his dead money in the pot. You’ve got about 40% equity against a typical LJ opening range and probably more equity against the active BN. As the short stack and five players away you won’t be able to fold to a seat.

Rabman50 is suggesting using the value hunting zone principle from “Short Stack Ninja.” With a stack <5bb you’re mostly looking for spots where there will be an isolation raise that folds out other players and leaves dead money in the pot. You’re using the big stack’s fold equity and you’re taking advantage of profitable pot odds.
