Stone Bubble Ranging and Decision
Posted by fivebyfive on August 19, 2021 at 9:58 amWe’re on the stone bubble, hand-for-hand in an ACR $33 tourney. It folds to us in the cutoff and we open to 2.2bb from a stack of 79 bb (we cover all the remaining players). Small blind shoves 41 bb (!). Folds back to us. 37 left, 36 are paid and we are currently 3rd overall in chips. If we call and lose, we’re middle of the pack. If we call and win, we’re a mega chip leader. If we fold, we’re still 3rd overall.
We have 170 hands with SB. They are a 17 VPIP, 10 PFR, 6 3b. So we’d like a little more sample, but they don’t seem that crazy of a player.
So first, what kind of range do you think SB has here on the stone bubble?
Second, what is the worst hand you’re calling with here? (without considering bubble dynamics, Floptimal says we should be calling down to 66 and ATs, but I think the bubble factor has to radically change this decision)
Come up with your own answers and then I’ll tell you what I did. Teaser, I folded a very good hand, but I’m not sure if it was correct.

As the big stack at the table you profit from keeping the bubble alive. A medium stack player should be concerned about his tournament life when he pushes all-in against the big stack regardless of the fact that your range should be relatively wide.
I put SB on TT+, AQ+
My calling range would be AA, KK. Very tight I know, but as mentioned above I want to keep the bubble going and as the big stack take advantage. With AA of KK this is an automatic call and if the bubble bursts so be it.

Well, this was at least Rabman-approved. I folded QQ.
