  • Why we don’t commit ICM suicide.

I listened to one of the RECpoker podcasts and Taylor was talking his normal nonsense about ICM mattering even in small stakes. After his advice recently on Satellite play worked out i decided to listen the other day. I don’t play in tournaments with life changing money so i never really cared about ICM. “Who cares about min cashing was always my mindset.”

Playing a small MTT on ACR the other day and folded AQ to a 3bet one off the bubble. I was going to be committing over 50% of my stack if i called so it was a jam/fold in my eyes. At this low of stakes i was very much above villians range, but decided to play conservative and cash. Ended up taking 3rd for a 8x buyin result.

Something never computed about being a small stack doesnt guarantee a min cash after cashing.

TLDR: Making sure you mincash doesnt mean you can’t morecash.

You should join us in the current book study Endgame Poker Strategy the ICM Book by Dara O’Kearney with Barry Carter. Lots of interesting discussion on this, obviously. The bubble is one of the more extreme ICM spots. The ranges change drastically during extreme ICM spots and are very dependent on stack size (who covers who). It is surprising how tight you need to be in those spots. Most players in those tournaments have no concept of ICM and continue to blast away. You can take advantage of those players by making the exploitative fold. Well done!
