I’m fine with how you played the hand but would also be fine with a call. The experience you have with this player tells you that there is a good chance you are good. However, you still have a decent stack and may also want to stay out of the way of this loose cannon who could have anything.

He is ahead with AA, 22, 88, 55 or two pair hands while folding out any potential backdoor flush draws after the flop when you bet 4K. (AA, he also 4 bets preflop and he folds out the lower pairs preflop unless he is quite sticky). The preflop raise chart for UTG would normally tell you that it should be about the top 5% of hands which leave him with a drawing hand like AK which you block and maybe AQ or perhaps a very high pair like QQ, JJ, maybe stretching into TT. That being said, none of this appears to apply to this player.

I have two competing mindsets when running into this type of player

1. I am glad they are in my tournament bringing their buy-in to the prize pool while taking very little out of it. Unfortunately, it does not make play very enjoyable for you or others at the table. So the question is whether this is the spot to call it off or am I able to wait for a better spot that I feel more confident with (against him or others).

2. I hate this type of player. If I study anything these days it is usually material versus a reasonable or at least a semi-reasonable player. My choice of action, call or fold, tells me little about the quality of my decision which I can then take and apply against reasonable players. This is what I find really frustrating and enhances the gambling element of poker.

I’m flying in June 26th and out July 4th. Staying at the Flamingo. I plan on playing the Super Seniors (First year I’m eligible) and maybe a few of the deepstacks. Plan on also playing at the Orleans as I like their poker room.
