  • Focus during sessions

Posted by jim on May 16, 2020 at 11:06 am

I think choosing when to play and when not to play is key. Sometimes I get an hour into a session and realize I’m just not really fully mentally or emotionally invested in it, and that makes it either less fun or less profitable. I should go clear my plate first and then play afterwards with no distractions and a clear head.

I can see this with cash. As almost exclusively a live, tournament player it’s more opportunistic. Do I have 5-6 hours available to play? Then I play… If you are an online cash grinder, it feels like you can be more selective in regard to how you are feeling at the time. Good insight… the pros would all agree with you.

I’ve found it hard to focus during the play money online home game. It’s very different than investing hundreds of dollars in a live MTT. Maybe it’s having an audience that does the trick.

One technique I just started trying is I Twitch stream these games and invited a handful of my friends to watch. I speak my thoughts out loud for the Twitch stream. Even if no one is actually watching just the possibility that someone could is forcing me to focus.

This is a GREAT method of maintaining focus and getting the most out of your own mental resources. Years before I joined RecPoker I was using free recording software like OBS and Flashback Express to record my own play AS THOUGH I was streaming or had people watching along – forcing myself to talk through my decisions helped me to remain accountable to myself and to make fewer undisciplined plays. Later I heard Sky Matsuhashi refer to this technique as Game Tape, which as a football fan, made perfect sense to me, and now one of the things I make every coaching client do as part of their homework is to record Game Tape from time to time for future review. Great stuff @MonkieSystem !
