There’s nothing like playing for first place in a big MTT, I’ll give you that!

There may be some cognitive biases at play here:
Choice Supportive Bias – I
think it is better because I chose it. At some point we made a decision to play MTTs. It is a comfortable place to reside as you have a set buy-in. All of our studies have been focused on MTTs. Another factor around our choice has to do with where we live. Minnesota does not allow NL cash games. As MTTers we are used to the NL strategies we have been developing. This leads us into:
Confirmation Bias – Only
focus on information that confirms your belief. We tend to do this mainly because we focus on things that interest us. Nothing wrong with this, but to make a statement that MTTs are better than cash when we don’t know enough about the latter to understand if this is in fact true. After saying all this I have to admit that I am guilty of both these cognitive biases as well and I much prefer MTTs over cash…..lol.

Good stuff… I’m completely biased! I don’t necessarily think it’s better, it’s just the game I know better. I do wonder if I could make more money as a cash player, but I think the thrill of a tourney victory is something that would be tough to replicate in cash.

I feel like I am a better cash player and my numbers back it up lol. But I always find my was back to MTT’s, I like the mind games and the ability to shove my stack into the bully at the table and watch them squirm.
-
I love playing deep stacked. I feel like there are more theoretical bluffs and possibilities to take advantage of spots when deeper, so I do like cash. Especially NL cash, which isn’t possible in MN. But there’s nothing like binking a tourney or a deep tourney run. If MN had NL, I’d definitely play cash more. But I’d still play more tourneys than cash.
-
I’ve always gravitated toward cash for the time flexibility. I can fit in some cash hands if I only have limited availability. If I feel like grinding out a long session, I can choose to do that with cash too. Also with the deeper stacks, you can explore so many more branches of the game tree.
But the rush of running deep in a tournament and sense of accomplishment of winning it all is special. Now that I’m playing exclusively online, I’m finding more opportunities to play MTT’s and I’m really enjoying it.
I was surprised to learn that in MN casinos, there are no NL cash games. So for cash games, your only option is limit? That’s no fun.

There are a few creative ways around it they have been doing, like “survivor” tournaments. 2-100 spread is a popular ‘limit’ game at Running Aces.
-
Minnesota does have 2-100 spread limit. It approximates NLHE, but there isn’t as much implied pressure because the max bet size is 100 chips. So a $50 bet on the turn sets up a $100 bet on the river instead of a $125-175 bet. It also dramatically reduces your opportunities to use the over bet.
-
Yeah, I enjoy it, but it’s a different game. You basically can pull the trigger once on a turn or river. Which means that more bluffs need to work or it is give up time (there are exceptions). It also means that multi-street “max” bets tend to (or should tend to) weight toward toward value.
