What the heck does Steve have?
Posted by arw on August 18, 2020 at 1:26 pmI witnessed this hand last night and caught myself thinking “what the heck does Steve have?”. In reality, I have no idea what he actually had. The fun is in the hunt of narrowing it down.
Blinds are 35/70 — it folds to MP who has 7000 chips raises to 2 bb. Steve is next to act in the highjack and he calls 2 bb with 5000 chips left. The cutoff has 4300 chips and decides to re-raise to 560 chips or 8 bb. I’m on the button and I fold. Both blinds fold. The MP calls 6 more bb. Action is to Steve.
Pre-Flop
What do you think Steve did?
1) Fold
— what hands do you think he folds?
2) Call 6 bb
— what hands do you think he calls with?
3) Re-raise to 20 bb (1400 chips) with 3600 behind.
— what hands do you think he would re-raise with?
4) Re-raise all in for about 70 bb
— what hands do you think he would push all-in with?

@SteveFredlund , any chance you can find this hand in your replay.
It was shortly after my big hand to go broke.

I don’t use a re-player… is that build into PS and I can go back? I am pretty sure I remember the hand you are referring to.

Fun idea but hard to guess his cards AND guess his action.
I’m taking a very hard stance that Steve does not fold in this spot. Not because of his range, but because you made this topic :P.
I’d guess that the majority of his range is calling here and made up of a lot of the “shoulder” range of cards (not the top of his range) so stuff like KJs/77/98s/etc.
I can see Steve raising in this spot, where he took a tricky line of just calling the initial raise with so many players left to act. If we see a raise from him, I’m worried about the likes of AA/KK/QQ. I’m assuming if he raises, he’s going to go all in because there is 1200 or so in the middle and playing an effective stack size of 4300. But a sizing of 1400 does make sense as well.

Your response is basically what I was looking for.

I love these range exercises – I think we are going to talk about this kind of work on another Forums Edition of the podcast sometime soon.
