  • Why Alex Beats Bobbie at Poker

Episode 240 of the Rec.Poker podcast featured Duncan Palamourdas discussing his experiences teaching poker for college credit. He also discussed his book “Why Alex Beats Bobbie at Poker”. I was the fortunate winner of a copy of that book. Thanks Rec.Poker!

The book arrived in today’s mail and I cracked it open to chapter 7, where he discussed hand reading. This caught my attention because he related the art of hand reading to Quantum Mechanics, showing the connection between how sub-atomic particles interact and the range of hands your opponent is likely to have. How could they possibly be related? But the nerdy college math professor made the connection in an interesting way and kept me reading through the whole chapter.

Thanks for the great prize…..and thanks for all you do.

I heard Duncan interviewed on a different podcast. I liked listening to him and was intrigued by the book premise. I’ve often questioned exactly what’s meant by “skill advantage” in poker and how to quantify the same. Particularly when I’ll hear somebody say “I played a sub-optimal hand because I felt I had a ‘post flop skill advantage’. Is that like turning water into wine on later streets? . . . 🙂

I did look the book up on Amazon and didn’t get much from either the TOC or the sample chapter although the same is limited.

Would be curious if you think the book is worth purchasing, or if it’s too far out there.
