Budget wsop
Posted by kenpachi on April 13, 2023 at 3:38 pmTo Jim and rest of community. I’m planning my 1st Vegas trip. I remember last year I think i saw you with sandwich stuff in your hotel so I assumed you budget your trips too. Do you bring a cooler? Do you have a preferred grocery store in Vegas? Do you drink coffee/what’s your plan if yes? Any other good little tips or tricks to save a few dollars so I can punt it away in tourneys

I’m a big fan of finding a place to stay with a kitchenette (they mostly all have coffee makers too). Even if the room costs a little more, you save a ton on food. I’ve stayed at the Platinum, Grand Chateau, Signature, Club Wyndham, and Tuscany. Signature and Platinum are the nicest, but also most expensive (sometimes you can find good deals though). They all change their rules so check which ones are charging resort fees these days before you book.
All of these are walkable to Ballys/Paris, but you do need to keep your wits about you a little late at night. I generally arrive a day early, and the first thing I do is Uber to one of the grocery stores and pick up a bunch of supplies for my stay. There’s an Albertsons and Target grocery not too far away on Flamingo. If you want healthier stuff, there’s a Whole Foods south of the Strip.
Once I have those supplies, I then go scout the venue, pre-register etc. I generally just bring a backpack with one of those cooler bags to put in it and pack stuff for each day from the room. I’m sure others have other ideas, but I’ve saved a ton by paying a little extra on rooms to get kitchen access.

Thanks for the response! You described kind of what I had planned with grocery store trip. Unfortunately I dont think I booked a kitchenette. I’m in a wheelchair and my main focus was an accessible shower(which I found). I’m staying at the Tropicana and it’s close too. I haven’t played a live tourney in a casino over a decade. At the wsop you mentioned pre reg how far in advance can you pre reg? If you do do you have to start the tourney right at start time? Thanks again for being patient with my noob questions

Supposedly, at least according to Trip Advisor, you can request a mini-fridge at the Tropicana. I’d call in advance and ask about it.
You can register for any tournament in advance once the series opens. They changed the rules, so yes, now if you register in advance your chips are in play from the start.
Another thing about getting there early is that you can get your players card etc., which you need to register. The lines for that can sometimes be long at peak times during the series, so I especially recommend this for first-timers and not having to worry about it on tournament days.

Good call! I hadn’t even thought about getting a players card. Definitely be nice to get that done before hand. Thanks for the advice! When are you heading into town?
-
Do we have to pre-register again as we have the last two years? If so it’s a great idea to do that a day before your first event. Get your players card, then pre-register.

How late does late reg usually run for most events? just in case I sleep in.

Depends on the event, but all the structure sheets are live now here: https://www.wsop.com/tournaments/

I’m usually not there long so I try and bring easy snacks that are also hygienic. Meaning, I don’t want to be eating trail mix when my hands are dirty. I much prefer a protein bar and (because I’m a dad) stuff like applesauce or fruit smoothie pouches. I also bring a sandwich if I can, PB&J is the classic so I usually go with that.
The other thing is I’m a fiend for water. I bring a plastic bottle that I can refill. At the WSOP they usually have a water cooler around and I fill up whenever I see it. I hate getting the 6 ounce bottles that they have for the players and hate creating waste with them when I don’t need to.

Good tips ty. Totally see the value in bars over a mix. Good to know I can refill the bottles!

Lots of great ideas here already – def bring 1-2 refillable water bottles, and then I go with a tried and true combo of a loaf of bread, PB&J, a few bananas…repeat for week 2. That all travels well so you can put a few in your bag each morning. Don’t forget ziploc bags or plastic wrap and something to spread the PB&J with! Boom, you’re golden. My one indulgence is that if the complimentary hotel coffee sucks (and it will) I will occasionally pick one up on the go in the morning as a little treat to start my day. Not worth having coffee, milk, sugar, etc at the room and then you have to worry about cleaning the travel mug after etc – no thanks. Minifridge is key for the hotel room, if you are ok eating very simple foods like sandwiches there’s no need or a full kitchenette. I’m excited for you, @Kenpachi !

good call on the baggie n utensil. i probably wouldve forgot!

If your hotel room doesn’t have a mini-fridge, you can request one and tell them you need it for your medication. There should not be a charge and they can’t question you about your “medication.”
-
Ill try that. Should i call ahead n request it or do it while checking in?
