I know, right? How can you even say “Should I stay or should I go now?” without doing it in the Clash’s cadence! Thanks for posting this chart. And thanks to Jim, Rob and Taylor for the very detailed podcast! I thought there was so much wisdom in there I’ve listened to it twice! The real gem for me was Taylor’s idea of NOT shoving on the turn on the small chance that the turn checked through. My thinking was “Since there is no way I am ever folding I might as well just put it on in” without considering that I might not have to.

Just my two cents worth. We all know that any of my advice should be taken with a grain of salt! But since so many people respond to my posts I thought I’d give it a try. For the most part on a paired board with high cards where the pair is the highest card, I find that a small bet will knock out everyone that doesn’t have one of those two cards, a pocket pair, or a draw. With a rainbow flop there is no flush draw here. So if my bet gets called I know I am against one of these. The only straight draws are 9 10, 10 Q, and AQ.
The turn is particularly tough here since it does complete a straight, and pairs with a higher card than yours that would have called with a straight draw (AQ). However, you can argue that either of these are not in their range after just completing from the SB). I would choose to make a big bet here (3/4 pot?) to find out where I stand. It is going to fold most underpairs. If I get called I’m now likely chopping or behind. They now most likely have a K, Q or J, or A 10. I may even fold out a few weaker Js.
If I get called here I’m never leading the river, and am quite often folding to a bet. I just don’t think there is much I am ahead of. I guess the only thing that could change my mind of course, is a J on the river! Now I’m ahead of AQ and A 10 (if they even got here). But I’m still behind any Kx which I think makes up the majority of their range, along with a lot of Jx
When they suddenly lead out on the river, I believe at best I am chopping the hand. I likely would have ended up calling here real time on the river and lost, but still had some chips to play with. Having had time to analyze it, I think it is a really hard fold, but a correct one.

Well, i want to retract part of that… I think perhaps people to tend to fold to 3B on the flop a lot, but not with a lot of dead money from limpers in the pot.
-
As I think you know, the player pool here runs the gamut, from total fish to a few sophisticated players. I play 2 $7 tournaments for every $15 i play, so my reads may be skewed, but my sense is people way overcall 3Bs.
Very few of them are probably thinking in ranges, so giving myself credit for my range hitting the flop better” is probably asking too much of them!
Probably never folding top pair on the flop, and maybe 25% on the turn.
So, in a nutshell, you just refuted every point I made! Point well taken!

Thanks all. The preflop fold seems about unanimous! Folding a premium pair preflop is one of the very disciplined moves that I think makes a good player into a stronger player. It’s one I know I have to work on, and this helps drive it home for me!

Thanks. I tend to agree, which is why I think I posted this. I really was surprised when he turned over “just” AK for two pair. It is the only other hand I can think of that a player at those stakes will 4 bet. Last week when I played in the practice round that Chris has to use for his deep dives I cold called a 4 bet with QQ, but was also thinking at that time that even that was a mistake (it was!). I do get your point that villain reopening the action points even more strongly toward them having KK or AA. I think what swayed me was his stats, even though it was only 40 hands. I know I could have folded it to someone with tight stats.
Aside from that I am interested in knowing if anyone has thoughts on the issue of whether the SPR has the same effect on a strong draw as it does on a made hand. My understanding is that once the SPR (the turn in this case not preflop) gets so low you should continue with almost all your “made hands” even if they are not at the top of your range. Obviously a strong draw is not a made hand. Does the same concept apply for a strong draw? This hand may not be the perfect example of the situation but the question came to me as an “abstract” while I was writing the original post.

Eric,
Just wanted to give some feedback on the new start time. I wasn’t able to make it last night, but I hope to next month on the early night. Always been a group I’ve been interested in, but as you know the standard start time makes it difficult for the east coast. Hopefully you got some other positive feedback last night!

Ah, interesting. I do usually download the entire tournament within a week to pick up the hands that the hand grabber missed. As you say, I may get 200 duplicates and only 8 new hands that it had missed. But I’ve always done it into the same database. I didn’t realize that if I kept a separate database I could see the hole cards. I know that if i just look into the hand history on Ignition I can see the hole cards. But never thought about it in the terms you describe. Thanks!
