Lots of great ideas here already – def bring 1-2 refillable water bottles, and then I go with a tried and true combo of a loaf of bread, PB&J, a few bananas…repeat for week 2. That all travels well so you can put a few in your bag each morning. Don’t forget ziploc bags or plastic wrap and something to spread the PB&J with! Boom, you’re golden. My one indulgence is that if the complimentary hotel coffee sucks (and it will) I will occasionally pick one up on the go in the morning as a little treat to start my day. Not worth having coffee, milk, sugar, etc at the room and then you have to worry about cleaning the travel mug after etc – no thanks. Minifridge is key for the hotel room, if you are ok eating very simple foods like sandwiches there’s no need or a full kitchenette. I’m excited for you, @Kenpachi !

OK folks I am officially booked for June 15-29 and can’t wait! Who else is down at that time, and what day makes the most sense for a meetup of some kind?

Hi @George we get this question a lot! I think, as Eric points out, bad beats are going to happen a certain percentage of the time. It would be weird if we WEREN’T getting the worst of it from time to time – and there’s really no panacea for that, other than just telling yourself that it’s variance and that it will equalize over time. In fact – it might NOT even equalize over time – it SHOULD – but some players will end their career having won more flips than they ‘deserve’ and some will end their career losing more flips than they ‘should’ have and that just stinks but it’s part of what makes the game great, too.

One thing that has helped me – MTTs in particular are very nasty about variance, because the outcome of the entire tournament can depend on one coin flip 5 hours in. The effects of the ‘luck’ of that one runout isn’t confined to that one hand, but instead your entire tournament. One of the things I like about playing cash is that if a hand doesn’t go my way: it’s just that one hand. Maybe I lose a buyin on a bad beat, but I can go take a walk and shout something vulgar in the parking lot and then come back and start playing again and each hand is a game unto itself – there’s no chain reaction that affects my entire day of poker like there is in a tournament setting. So if you haven’t dipped a toe into cash play instead of MTTs maybe look into mixing it up a little now and then and see if it appeals to you. Start at the lowest stakes until you feel comfy and you might find that there are times when you want to embrace the variance/excitement of MTT poker and other times when you just want to relax and enjoy some disconnected hands pf poker instead – you never know!

This helped me, anyway – reach out directly if you’d like to talk more about it, or to talk about other aspects of the mental game, anytime. And thanks for posting this in the forums! We all benefit from sharing this kind of thing with each other. Keep it up!

Looks like some dates are coming together for me to visit for the last two weeks of June or so – Something like Jun 15/16 to June 28/29 but no flights booked yet.

    I’m looking at events:

    39 ($1,500 Monster Stack) (Bust A, Play B)

    42 ($800 FO)

46 ($500 FO) on my birthday! LFG.

    49 ($1,500 TKO)

    51 ($500 Tag Team)

    53 ($1,500 Milly Maker) (+1R/F)

    56 ($500) (+1R)

I hopefully won’t be able to play all of them due to conflicts on multiple-day events *crosses fingers* and I don’t really have the bankroll to fire max bullets in the monster stack AND the milly maker but the rest seem like a reasonable slate. The only REALLY expensive situation would be the milly with up to 4 buy-ins at $1,500 each – that’s $6k (gross) so the only question for me is to see how I’m doing after the first week of winning at cash tables and donking it off in tourneys lol and see if the milly makes sense for a buyin or two.

I’m staying at the Linq for a week and the Horseshoe for a week – Mrs. BLUFFSTORINI found some decent rates god bless her. Where should we plan for a meetup this year, and on what dates? Put your own dates below and we’ll see if we can get some folks together whether it’s during my trip or other RECing Crew members it will be a fun time! Thanks @PetVet for getting this group going!

Good luck Roger! I know you’ve got what it takes, so it’s just a matter of time. Focus on what you can control – study time, playing at your best, making one good decision after another – and the results will come. Cheers to the start of a great year!

I agree with Chris on everything here, and I want to add that as stacks get shorter, the same principles apply: if they are calling preflop shoves light, then we just have to shove with a linear range from the top down, and sign ourselves up for some variance. Players like this do not require balance or blockers or other sophisticated tools – you beat these players with a blunt instrument instead – value hands – and you just keep swinging that club whenever you have it in your hand. So we can discuss where the thresholds are with regard to stack sizes and hand strength, but then it’s just a math problem.

Here’s an example. If we assign our shorter-stacked villain a SUPER wide limp/calling range of 34% that I have quickly and roughly put into Equilab here, the shoving range of 20% has an equity edge of 55% to 45% over the villain. If we tighten that to a little over 11% our equity edge increases to almost 60% to 40% over the villain. Notice that if we replace the bottom/worst pocket pairs and replace them with the bottom/worst suited Broadway hands, the equities remain almost exactly the same: it is the overall range strength that is more important than exactly which hands you fill our the frequency with once you have run out of ‘good hands’.

Of course, who remains left to act might not be just you and the villain. You can never know when other players behind you might wake up with aces. Plus, you might add more AX hands before some of these other unpaired combos. So – don’t use these actual ranges! This is really just an illustrative example of the equities of looser vs tighter ranges. But you can use this as a rough guide for building your own ranges. Thanks for posting, @marcel-dusyk !

I have always found that the Flamingo is a great option anytime – it’s a little older so some parts may be a little run-down but it’s often a fantastic price compared to other hotels on the strip and it is right across the street from the WSOP action at Ballys/Horseshoe/Paris – literally one crosswalk away. Hard to beat.

As it happens this year Mrs. BLUFFSTORINI found some good rates for me elsewhere, so I am staying at the LINQ from June 15-23 and then moving to the Horseshoe from June 23-29.

I have booked a non-smoking double-bed room at each, so I am looking for a RecPoker roommate to help defray the cost if anyone is there for those dates as well and needs somewhere to stay – if anyone is interested, send me an email jim@rec.poker and we’ll see what dates make sense for everyone to fill all the nights. On June 23rd I’ll be moving from one to the other so that day will require checking out and then checking in just fyi. All other days I’ll likely be playing tourneys or cash tables for most waking hours so I’m a good roommate in that I will never be around to bug you in the room hahaha
