Granted you can lop off the top of their range when they only call the 3! But that still leaves some over pairs and some nines and sets in their range. In my experience “They always have it”.

There may be some cognitive biases at play here:
Choice Supportive Bias – I
think it is better because I chose it. At some point we made a decision to play MTTs. It is a comfortable place to reside as you have a set buy-in. All of our studies have been focused on MTTs. Another factor around our choice has to do with where we live. Minnesota does not allow NL cash games. As MTTers we are used to the NL strategies we have been developing. This leads us into:
Confirmation Bias – Only
focus on information that confirms your belief. We tend to do this mainly because we focus on things that interest us. Nothing wrong with this, but to make a statement that MTTs are better than cash when we don’t know enough about the latter to understand if this is in fact true. After saying all this I have to admit that I am guilty of both these cognitive biases as well and I much prefer MTTs over cash…..lol.

AdministratorJuly 31, 2020 at 1:30 pm in reply to: Is this a good triple barrel spot or do we give up?My thought is to X/R larger on the flop. If he calls the larger sizing and based on your description he is not folding the turn. With a larger sizing on the flop you can X/C a small turn bet and try to realize your equity on the river. I would not try to bluff this particular villain as played.

Binkley did all the hard work. I am just going to throw out a guess. 2h4h.

I had 2900 chips. I late regged and had only seen about ten hands. I tried to channel my inner Chris Jones and made the call. The limp-jammer had QQ and it was another early night for me.

My first thought on reading this is that one of the two had a pocket pair. I don’t mind getting AK in preflop against an under pair. The problem comes in when we have another player in the mix. They could easily be in there with some Ax hands which would block some of our outs. I fold there multi-way.

I will occasionally limp but the conditions have to be right. On a table full of passive players where we will usually see the flop multi-way I will limp with Suited Aces, small pairs, and occasionally suited gappers.

Fancy Play Syndrome. I like to keep is simple. You are usually better off using a straight forward strategy. When you mix in a fancy play your opponent has to react the way you think he should. If your opponent doesn’t recognize the situation you are representing then he is not inclined to do what you want him to do. Therefore FPS is something to avoid.

Sorry Jim bad plan. ARW gave a fantastic analysis so I won’t elaborate on that. Just a couple of questions. What hand were you targeting for your “Value Bet”? Have you watched the April 2020 seminar Part two on SPR and Bet Sizing? Do you always go for for thin value with top pair weak kicker? Have you ever heard of FPS?

I’ve been putting together the slides and I think we can do 16-18. This is post flop flop, turn, and river bet sizing. The section on Naming and Valuing hands could get quite in depth and may take a session by itself. If we get through 16-18 quick enough we could start on Naming and Valuing Hands.

His outrage was due to entitlement. He didn’t want to understand the reasoning behind your call he just wanted to win. If he was a thinking player he would welcome your call with his specific hand. He is almost a 70% favorite with that match up. I know I suffered from the same entitlement syndrome early in my poker career. Then I asked myself “If I could see his cards would I want him to call?”. This opened my eyes and allowed me to understand the evil witch called Variance.

It has to do with what my opponent is doing. If he is being extremely aggressive I will try to use that against him. I will limp the button with big hands and raise with marginal hands. If my opponent seems passive I will open everything from the button. As the “flow” changes I will fold more often to aggression and let them grow overconfident and then up my aggression level. It is about never letting your opponent get a read on the strength or weakness of your hand based on your actions. And yes I have open raised with any two from the button heads up.
